Article: 20 Singaporean Slangs

Even though I always try to perfect my pronunciation of my Chinese language and improving my English, never will I detest our proud Singaporean-style English, Singlish. I definitely feel more at ease when I hear people speaking them (but not shouting them!). Born, breed, grow locally, I definitely am a Singaporean, despite being mistaken many times by strangers over the years.

Reading the article (below) definitely put a smile on me, and I must thank some friend who introduce #13 to me via some meme app (or something like that) haha!

Forget about resolution

It is quite interesting to see which of my photos are the more popular ones.
Take a look at my Instagram Top 5 for 2013 (Thanks to Statigr.am)

Not too bad huh? Do help me 'Like' by clicking here

Saw an article recently on doing away resolution. I actually kind of agree with it. It also mention about a To-Do List instead.

Instead of doing a yearly To-Do list, maybe I should do a monthly one too.

January will be my exercise month, planning to reduce my meet-up and focus more on exercising...

January:
- Lose 5kg before Lunar New Year.
- Run at least 3 times a week
- Visit gym at least twice a week
- Complete the Photo editing for Nat & Ber
- Complete my 7 owls for my Photonics friend
- Complete the sewing gift I still owe XY
- Complete 2 chapters of "Networking: A Beginner Guide" book
- Write a To-Do List for February =)

2o14:
- To complete my Ukelele class (end in Mar 1) and able to play it smoothly!
- To start my Ukelele level 2 class.
- To weigh 67kg by the end if the year.
- To pen lyrics to one melody (even if the lyrics sucks!)
- To start planning on my cafe (a little vague, I know!)

Ahh... can't think much for 2o14. That's all for now... ciaoz~!

Celebrating December

December is a month of celebrations and gatherings.

Most of my annual gatherings are in the month of December, except for one which was postponed till 2014. T.T

I must thank all my friends for turning up for gatherings and those who are willing to spend some time with me, celebrating my birthday! I feel so good to have these people around! hahaha...

This year, I got many 'surprise' birthday presents~!
First birthday present of the year~! Volkswagen Kombi car models! Met Diana, Choon & Derek on 1st Dec (after my exhausting run...) and Diana gave me this set as a present! <3 I find them cute when I saw them in airport back in July when I go for my Phuket trip! Shuyi said it will be cheaper in BKK and Diana bought it for me when she went in Nov (I think) ! Thanks Diana, Love you much much! =D
Cute Socks =D
I met Gwen, Shirley, Boon Chay & WJ on 5th Dec for gathering and received 3 X*mas presents! Sorry guys for not bringing any! =x But thanks for the presents! One of the present is a hand-made socks with choc stuffed inside (see above)! haha... Nice!
Happy Birthday to.... Me!
On 18th Dec, I met up with a bunch of friends! Ok, I should name them! haha... They are Joey, WJ, Jx, Dz, Terry and two Vietnamese sisters, Truc and Ngoc (as on FB, haha). Elaine was not able to turn up due to illness, but it is ok as she made it up by treating me to Antoinette desserts on Saturday. Nevertheless, we had a great time having dinner at Mushroom Pot & counting down to my Birthday at Changi T3. The sisters got me a Tee. I have yet to try on... haha... no confidence since it is erm... M size! hahaha...
I was wondering what these people got me... Too bad not the RV residences that was on the newspaper wrapper! But to my pleasant surprise, they gave me what I am looking for a while!
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles LEGO set!
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles LEGO set! OMG! Nice right?! I know!!! Too bad there are two missing turtles in this set! This means I need to buy the other two turtles (Michelangelo and Donatello). I was looking for the 4 ninja turtles characters and was planning to get them. So I am like so surprised to receive this! =D I heard that the original characters were not sold separately. Those in the market are most likely MIC (made-in-China). Will have to decide if I want to get another set or just get the not-so-originals! Have to think of where to set up and put this display set too! *Headache* haha!
On the actual date of my birthday, I met JH, Xin & Bel for KTV! Ok, don't ask me when was the last time we went together... 'cos none of us remember! But had a short but fun time together! JH & Bel got me a Waffle Maker~! haha... I wonder why did they decide on this present! haha! Since I am expecting an kitchen appliance from another group of friend, I felt like I am having a house warming, rather than Birthday~! hahaa!
On the other hand, Xin got me a very ATAS trendy bag. It must have cost a lot! I must make myself look good to be able to look stylish using the bag~! haha... Thanks Xin! Like the loud colour, hope I am able to use it soon! haha. She also made a Christmas tree using beads that got Nat & I fighting over it! She gave it to us on 20th when we met for another of my mini-celebration brunch at Spathe. I decided not to post the pics of our X*mas presents (else this blog post will never end!) Anyway, Nat got confused with what I wanted and told Ber to get me a electric whisk/beater! haha! Thanks Ber for changing it for me. Hence, I must wait for another few days before I officially got the correct one.
Yes! This is the shocking expression I got when I saw the present! (I looked more shocking then!) Imagine me carrying this HUGE present home! I wonder how Ber managed to bring it from work through the Orchard crowd. We went TCC at Peranakan Place for our X*mas celebration with Angelina, Jingda and Natalia. But unfortunately, Jingda was sick and unable to attend. I, myself, was sick too but managed to survive that night. I was almost bed-ridden on X*mas day! Anyway, this is what they got for me....
8in1 Food Processor
8in1! No wonder the box is so big... 8 in 1! There is grater, blender, mixer, chopper etc... I also cannot remember the 8 functions off hand! The brand is rather unknown to us though. Hopefully, it will work perfectly! They are asking me to make fries! haha... Now I must get myself more hardworking in the kitchen for 2014!

My last gathering for the year is with my Photonics friends~! 7 friends turned up and we got a X*mas gift exchange after our lunch at Tim Ho Wan (Toa Payoh). Most of us have never been to Tim Ho Wan before, which is why we decided to go there. The food is pretty good! Unfortunately, I don't really like the staff. Boo!

Like the past few years (forget when exactly), I received the most expensive gift there, which is over the budget set! Thanks HC for the Jean Perry towel, L'occitane shampoo and conditioner! May use them when I am on trip since they are less than 100ml per bottle! haha

2013 has been an eventful year so must really really thank all those that helped me and took care of me over the year... =D Let's hope for a better 2014~!

A Running Start

I started the month of celebration and gathering with a run - Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (Ekiden). It always been fun running as a team and when all gather after the finishing line. Unfortunately, this year's event did not end on a happy note, for me.

Getting ready for the race at 4am!

Thanks to the weather, even for runner #5 or #6, no one need to run under the scorching heat if your team took 5-6 hours to complete the run.
Runners at the starting point
Unlike last year, this year's event seems to be a little disorganised and lack of sponsors. Firstly, the race pack is pathetic for a run that is consider expensive. Unlike last year, first few Ekiden runners are not offered any 'goodies' after their run.

At some of the Ekiden Point, the helpers/volunteers did not shout out the numbers way before the runners reached the changing pen. Last year, there are two helpers, one stand at a further end, while the other will repeat the numbers being called out. This will ensure the next runner will have time to get ready. This year, some of the points do not even have anyone shouting out. Boo!
Ekiden Point 2
During team briefing, we were asked to sign out after running our leg of the event. This is not the case. If they decided to call off the signing out procedure, they should have let us know much earlier, even if it is not affecting our performance much. Many runners simply ran to the booth (for drinks) to look for someone that let them sign.

I have not even touch on the time discrepancy that marred the event over the last few days on newspaper. To be honest, my team is considering if we should participate in next year's event.

After reaching Ekiden Point 2

I am also disappointed that the team spirit and responsibility (for my team) is not there. Unlike last year, one of the runners did not inform the other waiting that she has completed. I doubt I will have her in my running team again. Another went home due to weather condition. (No, I can't fault her.)

Despite the disappointment, I am happy to complete the race in such a good timing (for me) and I could even complete 2 legs (#1 & #6) of the race! *claps*

3 Peas In A Pod (他她他) : Review

Synopsis

"3 Peas In A Pod" is a story about friendship and love. Three university students studying in Australia (Penny from Singapore, Perry from Taiwan and Peter from Korea) are good friends whose lives are intertwined with one another's.

Just before they graduate and go back to their respective countries to embark on their working lives, the three friends decide to go on a road trip in the country they've been studying in for the last 4 years.

Little do they know, this farewell holiday is a trip that would change their lives forever.

What I Think

"3 Peas In A Pod" is Michelle Chong's second movie and somehow I have quite an expectation from her, especially since the first movie, "Already Famous" (一泡而红), was a very moving one. *Thumbs up* The only disappointment prior to watching the movie is that Michelle will not be acting in the show. She will only have a cameo appearance in one of the scene. Boo!

After watching the trailer, we can roughly know how the movie is going to be like. 3 university besties (BFFs) going on a graduation road trip in South Australia before going back to their respective countries and move on with their working life. As expected, they have fun, some quarrels and then make up during the trip, knowing more about each other. To be honest, I do find the movie predictable and a little draggy in the beginning of the show. It is until the last 30 minutes or so, we see the twist to the storyline. I can guess some of the plots, but my friends are totally clueless even at the end of the movie. It took me a while to explain what actually happened till they realised the twist is so great! Now, they are impressed. You need to be totally 'feel' or 'into' the movie till the very end to understand the whole story. Else, you may want to watch the movie TWICE! =)

Calvin Chen (辰亦儒) is Perry, the Taiwanese scholar among the 3 peas. A very mysterious character, even Penny is unable to explain how did he ended up joining the 3 peas. No one know his likes or dislikes, but one thing for sure, he is very thoughtful and observant. He know exactly what the other two peas like. In one of my favorite scenes, when they are in a pub:
Perry: "There's lot of things you don't know about me"
Penny: "You never tell us."
Perry: "Well, you never ask"
3 simple lines, yet it meant so much to the movie and Perry.

Frankly speaking, I do not really like Calvin when he is in Fahrenheit. He is neither the most handsome of the boyband, nor did his vocal really stand out. But my views on Calvin changed after performance as Perry. He must thank Michelle in giving him this opportunity! He did very well indeed. I love his voice (and that accent!) and the way he deliver his lines. He sang the Chinese version of the theme song, "我與你", very well. I pre-ordered the album on iTunes due to this. I wonder why the movie doesn't make him look good in that pub scene where he is singing with teary eyes. But I guess, as a good artiste, you should not care about your image in the movie. To me, he did awesome.

Prior to the movie, I don't know who Alexander Lee Eusebio (亞歷山大) is. He is formerly a U-Kiss member. His character, Peter is the rich Korean heartthrob of the movie that Penny (and other girls in the University) attracted to. His life is often manipulated by his dad. He is supposed to return to South Korea for his arranged marriage after his university life. Despite all he has in life, no one understand what he really wanted, not even his BFFs. To his BFFs, he appeared to be the emotional one who can get moody all of a sudden. There is many scene where Alexander cannot be too exaggerating for his character and he did very well. His character became stronger after the twist at the end. Good Job! In case you still don't know, he is singing the Korean version of the theme song, "You and I".

Penny, the last pea in the pod, is the lucky lady caught in the middle of the two guys. Penny love Peter right from the beginning and is always by his side. She is the first and one seeing Peter cries (before Perry join them) and she always help Peter to copy the lecture notes. She slowly falling in love with Perry during the trip. Soon, she is caught in the situation of choosing between them. Jae Liew (柳勝美) was the lucky 'Penny' girl selected by Michelle Chong and her panel of judges, out of more than 800 hopefuls who came to auditioned for the role. As a newcomer, she did pretty well. Her acting, like the guys, is natural. The only scene I do not really like is when she is shouting at Peter, which I find it a little bit over the top. Go watch the movie if you wanted to know why she shouted at someone she loves so much.

To keep everyone in suspense, I shall not reveal the twist of the storyline. On overall, I love the plot and twist, something we don't normally see in movies. Technically, there are some areas that the movie can improve on though. Some of the scenes is doesn't really fit the twist, though I must applause to Michelle's ability to make a 360 degrees change to the story, simply by adding some scenes at the end. It is really amazing.

The movie portrays a very beautiful South Australia. Oh, I so wanted to do a road trip now! haha. The aerial shoot could be better though, the quality of the image seems a little blur/'noisy'.  Otherwise, it will be a great show.

The movie will be officially screened on 14th November 2013 in Singapore's cinemas.

Getting Back on Track

2km of morning walk...
2km of morning jog...

I hope I can continue the habit and get back my fitness. It is a challenge to wake up early at 6am. (Ok fine, I got out of bed at 6.15 or so...) My mind and body is still half asleep but I am glad that I managed to complete it.

Read an article at Fitness First on "Training for a Half Marathon". It is quite a simple yet achievable steps/goals for me. At the end of the day, I may not be really training for half marathon, but I believe it will guide me to the right direction. I just wanted to shed some pounds and complete my 10km runs more at ease. Recent weight gain doesn't help me much! =x

Shall head to Fitness First later for a gym class. My first Body Step class. Hope I can enjoy! haha...

开心食验室 Food Laboratory: Tofu Cheesecake

When I was having my lunch at the Sun with Moon restaurant, I saw the, supposedly, famous Tofu Cheesecake. Hence I decided to google a little to see if I can grab hold of a simple recipe. I saw two recipe and decided to settle with this one. The only tough part is to get the toufu dry and smooth. Hope you enjoy as much as I do...

Non-bake Tofu Cheesecake

Base
Line and grease a 8" springform cake pan
100g Marie biscuits, crushed
80g Melted butter

Combine crushed biscuit crumbs and melted butter together in a mixing bowl. Press the biscuit crumbs onto the base of the prepared pan and chill in the refrigerator for later use.

Filling

300g Pressed Tofu (momen tofu)
15g Gelatine powder
70g Water
250g Cream cheese (room temperature)
200g Natural yogurt/sour cream
60g Soya milk (reduced sugar)/fresh milk
100g Icing sugar
1/2 tsp Vanilla extract

Method:

  1. Wrap tofu in cheesecloth and press out water from tofu by placing a heavy object on top for about 15 mins.
  2. Soak gelatine powder in water and leave aside for about 5 minutes.
  3. In a food processor, blend cream cheese, tofu, yogurt, soya milk, icing sugar and vanilla till very smooth*.
  4. Heat gelatine powder mixture in a double boiler till melted and add to cream cheese mixture and blend well.
  5. Pour the mixture into pan, till all the mixtures are used up and gently shake the pan a little.
  6. Chill cake in refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  7. For perfect slices, cut cheesecake with a hot knife.

*Tip: This is a very important step to get a smooth and silky Tofu Cheesecake.

I reuse old pudding bottles =)

Never Gone...

It has been more than six years since the incident happens. Articles, records are being removed online and all the news we can find is via blog sites. Thank you, Romeo Tan for reposting the CNA article. Now I have also learned the importance of re-uploading the photos (still giving credits to the source) before the site or user took it down.

Through these years, we lived on. We continue to live and bracing our lives through thick and thin, wearing smiles wherever we can. But it is always during this period of the year that we realised, once again, he never left...

His smiles, his actions, his behaviours is deeply engraved in the memories of me, and I am sure many others too. I hope he is doing fine now, wherever he is. We will, on the day of his death anniversary, visit him again. He is still the pillar of EC0118. Thanks Jeremy. See you soon.

I was browsing through the blog site created in the memory of late Jeremy, wanting to take a look at the photos posted. Unfortunately, the photos are now dead link. I may log in to do some editing. (Hope his bro and him don't mind.) Here are some of the photos I gathered:

开心食验室 Food Laboratory: Oreo Balls

I actually like to try out simple recipe every now and then during special occasions (usually birthdays & farewells). This recipe (or link) was posted on my Facebook's wall by a friend who wanted me to make it for her after I made her a Milo Panna Cotta.

The recipe for the Panna Cotta is suitable for Lactose Intolerant people, but the Oreo balls is not. Hence, I made some changes to the recipe and added strawberry flavour to the sweet delights. I am glad the desserts were so well-received. Hence, I decided to share it... =) Hope you enjoy it! =)

Strawberry Oreo Balls

Ingredients

Ingredients:

1 package Oreo cookies (9x3, 264.6g)
1 pack dark chocolate (Calbury's Old Gold Dark Chocolate - 70% Cocoa)
3 tbsp of skimmed milk
2-3 tsp of strawberry flavouring
1-2 tsp of almond bits (optional)

Method:
1. Leave the chocolate bar at room temperature.
2. Place Oreo Cookies in a bag/blender and smash/blend until it is the consistency of dirt.
3. Mixed the strawberry flavouring with the milk.
4. Add the milk slowly into the smashed cookies.
5. Roll the mixture into balls.
4. Chopped the chocolate into smaller pieces, and place it in a small bowl. This will allow every part of the chocolate to melt consistently.
4. Boil a pot of water. Off the fire. Place the bowl of chocolate over the hot water for a short while then stir when it begin to melt. This will prevent the chocolate from overheated and dried.
(Note: Chocolate that are 'burnt' or too dry will not be able to use anymore.)
5. Cover balls in chocolate then leave to set in the fridge.

That Girl in A Pinafore (我的朋友,我的同學,我愛過的一切) : Review

Synopsis

Should you listen to your heart or follow your head?
A coming of age teenage romance from Singapore set in 1993, about dreams, friendships, first love, and the difficult choice between following your head, or listening to your heart.
The story follows the teenagers' efforts to bring business back to a struggling folk music pub, and the blossoming love between Jiaming and May, both fans of Singaporean folk music.

1992, Singapore is on the cusp of having the first elected President, and it has just banned chewing gum. There is an air of hope and rejuvenation in the air, where everyone believes that a Singaporean dream is possible. There’s a bunch of young people who are trying to create a Singapore music industry and creating plenty of local works at a crazy pace. This is also the time where music cafes/lounges featuring local talents are sprouting everywhere alongside a new trend called karaoke.

Jiaming (Daren Tan) is a free spirited lad who has never really taken school seriously. His parents own a music lounge called “Meng Chuan”, and he felt he could always help run the business if he drops out of school. True enough, his ‘O’ level results in high school bombed and he dropped out of school.

Jiaming has a bunch of buddies named Caogen (Seah Jiaqing), Haoban (Kenny Khoo) and Xiaopang (Kelvin Mun) who were able to score well enough to move on to Junior College. But they were caught renting porn magazines by the Principal and had to be suspended for a month.

During this month, the 4 boys took part in a local music competition, had their taste of puppy love, and worked hard to bring business back to “Meng Chuan’s” struggling business. This coming of age tale, see Jiaming and gang learning the harsh realities of pursuing dreams in the real world; and finding out that choosing between what your heart wants and what the society expects from you, is akin to losing your innocence in an adult world.

Through the closure of 'Meng Chuan' in the story, the film reflects the eventual demise of the 'Xinyao' (Singapore Chinese folk music) movement around the mid-90s. And signifies a losing of innocence in the youth's struggle to battle the realities of growing up.

THAT GIRL IN PINAFORE 《我的朋友,我的同学,我爱过的一切》is the first Singapore film in 15 years to celebrate the success of 'Xinyao'( 新谣), the popular 90s Singaporean folk music movement. The film re-introduces this music with contemporary arrangements to a new generation in this charming teenage love story.

What I Think

Music? Check. Intention? Check. Plot? Hmm... check. Young idols? Check.

To be honest, I am a little disappointed with the movie.  Why? Let me run through the elements one by one.

Music. Since most of the new actors are singers in real life, they have a certain standard in belting out the songs. A pity that there is only a very selected number of songs in the movie, owing to the copyright issue. The new arrangements of some of the numbers destroyed the original feel of the song, and to be honest, the arrangement does not belongs to the era.

Intention/Plot. Using 'Xinyao' as a selling point, the movie did a notable effort in giving the classic songs a new life. Unfortunately, that is the only selling point of the movie. The plot is predictable, nothing new. I particularly think that the movie is not very well produced, the crew behind the movie should take some blames. When the actors/singers are singing in the movie, the lips and the song are not matched. It is very obvious that they are lip-syncing. The movie also lack of a flow. I felt that as if the movie is being shot by different directors, experiencing different angles. Lack of a direction/style, maybe. Just when I thought I am the only one being critical, my friend commented the same thing before I saying my thoughts. (He has more questions!)

Young idols. This movie stars Mediacorp artistes Daren Tan, Julie Tan and Jayley Woo... Apart from the disappointing flow of the movie, I must applaud that some of the first-time actors/actresses put up a good show. They actually outshine or on par with the Mediacorp artistes whose acting looks unimpressive in comparison. I am particularly impressed with Sherly Ng (as Liyana), Kelvin Mun (as Xiao Pang) and Kenny Khoo (as Hao Ban). Their acting is natural, funny and sincere. Daren Tan is a little too old for his part too!

This movie is popular among the youngsters/teens, thanks to the local support and the fans of the idols. Unfortunately, this is definitely not, and will never be, an award-winning material. I might watch it another time though, since my friend is saying that the movie is not that bad. I am hoping that I can take back my words too. =)

Kki Sweets : Review

The little drom store cornerWhat's Kki? just like the decorations, Kki does not only offer cakes, they caters the needs of one's five senses - sight, smell, taste, hearing and/or maybe touch... Sitting inside Kki, you will see artfully decorated interior, smell the aromatic vanilla sencha tea, taste the delicious desserts, listen calmly to the wise-choice of music & you can touch anything/everything at the little drom store. The decorations are simple, homely yet classy.

The little Drom store offers a wide range of items that hardly can be found in the market today. Items ranging from Pepsi Cola bottles to antique typewritter. These antiques aren't those extremely expensive ones that are not within our reach. These are more like heartland antiques from the good old Singapore. What amused me is the openess of the store owners for visitors/customers to take photos of their items at free will. Isn't that great? Personally, i am inspired by what i saw!

K-ki offers little selections in their drinks, prefering to focus on their dessert cakes. I had camomile tea it taste refreshing. It compliment the desserts perfectly. Some of the cakes are said to be sweeter. With a tea like this, i am sure that you will have a great enjoyment in the cakes.

Wall of Photos
One particular thing caught my attention - the pillar of photographs. It is amazing to find out that the owner of K-ki not only have love for cakes but the photography as well. I like how the photographs are taken, arranged and made into postcard like pictures. It is awesome! I was the only customer in the tea house at the time of visit and i could see the lady from the drom store took her own camera and starts to take photos of the surroundings, items, store etc. I wonder if she is the photographer of the pillar of photos. Sitting at my place is like watching a little tv scene. The feeling are indescribable.
The services are friendly and warmth. Entering the tea house is more like entering my friend's home. The lady spoke to everyone like her friend. I enjoy spending my peaceful time there without much disturbance. They do not 'chase' me away despite me having only tea after an hour or so. I ended up with a second cake after requesting a refill of hot water to the pot of tea.

Maya cake
Maya Cake
"Maya" cake taste unique and till now, i am unable to explain the taste. I did not approach the staff to ask though. "Souffle Cheesecake" tasted a little bit like moist Japanese cheesecake but it is a good offering for those who doesn't like their cheesecakes to be too cheesy. All the cakes are freshly baked by the owner himself. I heard the lady at the counter is the wife of the chief! Both of them are equally friendly. Among the 3 cakes i tasted, i love "Little Red Riding Hood" (LRRH) best! It is available only around 2pm and it will be sold out before 5.30pm. I wonder how many pieces did they make.

"LRRH" is a chocolate mousse cake coated in dark chocolate, topped with a raspberry. Inside the mousse cake, there is a layer of raspberry filling as well. The taste is heavenly. A must try, especially for dark chocolate lover like me! The mousse, fillings & coating compliment each other very well. It is definitely a delicacy. I guess, this explains why the dessert sold out so quickly.

This is my first, and definitely not the last visit of K-ki...

ILO ILO (爸妈不在家) : Review

Synopsis

Set in Singapore, ILO ILO chronicles the relationship between a family of three and their newly arrived Filipino maid, Teresa, who has come like many other Filipino women in search of a better life.

The entire family needs to adapt to the presence of this stranger, which further threatens their already strained relationship. Still, Teresa and Jiale, the young and troublesome boy she cares for, soon form a bond. Their unique connection continues to develop and soon she becomes an unspoken part of the family.

But this is 1997 and the Asian Financial Crisis is starting to be felt in all the region…

What I Think

A very simple and straight-forward story. I do think that this is a story that many Singaporeans (or those who stayed here for years) can connect to. It is not a very new situation in Singapore but it is something new for a movie. Definitely not the mainstream/commercial kind of movie that includes lots of big cast, budget, actions etc. In recent years, there are many good indie short movie from Singapore. This is definitely one of them. It is no wonder why the film won Camera d’Or for best first feature film, becoming first Singaporean movie to win at prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Apart from the story plot, the production team did a great job in bringing out a good flow of the movie and leaving little (or no) traces of 21st century. Many scenes bring the memories back to me of my school days. I love the scene where the students sits in pair (horizontally), saying pledges, and even the public canning seems so familiar! (No, I am never on the receiving end!) The cast did a great job too!

Chen Tianwen, a veteran actor in local TV scene, brings out the character of a loving husband and father well. I love the scene where he wishes his wife's mother a happy birthday. So classic! I wonder why he took so long to be cast in a featured film or movie.

Yeo Yann Yann's character has lots of scenes that cannot be acted with too drastic actions, need lots of emotions and she did it very well. She brings out the struggle she faces, the dilemma she is having and feeling lost when she saw her son being close with her maid. And I am still wondering how does the scene of her giving birth in the last few minutes and the regular check-up looks so real~!

Angeli Bayani acted Teresa, the very understanding maid, in the film. I wonder how did the director managed to get such a natural actress. I have not seen her in the past but I do feel that her act as a Filipino maid is super convincing. From expression to her movement, it is a very typical maid we see in our daily life in Singapore.

Koh Jia Ler is very new to the entertainment scene. He is not very cute or the typical handsome boy which many movie like to cast, but he is very natural. This is definitely a case where talent speaks louder than looks. A very good job done by this Primary Six student.

I can't comment much on the director, Anthony Chen (haha!) but I do think this is a good film and for those who have not watch, please watch it. Not only supporting a local (Singaporean) film, but more because how good the featured film is.

Me Time

I initially wanted to do a review for Le Cafe in Peace center, but decided to do a this post instead! haha...

Reason is I have no idea how to pronounce this Le word. Is it a Chinese word Le or is it french? But on its menu, there is nothing french or whatsoever...

The menu's cover reads " CHINESE Japanese CUISINE"... Hmm... I wonder...

Anyway, I am here to chill and relax while I wait for the movie to start.... Shall I draw or should I get back to photo editing? Tough tough decision! haha...

Let me think about it!

What I think about Licensing Regime

I just read "Petition for the immediate withdrawal of the Licensing Regime". Up to now, 151 blogs/website had been listed, staging the #freemyinternet black out.

When I saw the link was shared in Facebook, I wanted to find out more about it. I heard about this new 'Licensing Regime' on the TV news but do not know the details. I support freedom of speech. Freedom to read whatever we want, wherever we want. What is the point of reading controlled news or even 'edited' information? It will be a step backwards, to be like certain countries that actually control their news or history.

When I continue to read the petition page, I felt some parts were written with a little bit of biasing and tries to change the reader mindset. I became hesitant in signing the petition. I will prefer the page to be written as general as possible and let one decide whether he agree to sign the petition or not. But well, if I am the one starting the petition, I guess I will want people to support my act.

"Even though MDA said that blogs do not fall under the licensing scheme, this is not reflected in the wording of the legislation. It leaves the door open for blogs or any other site to be forced to license in the future without any change in the law." http://www.petitions24.com

I do agree with the above statement that if the law is written in the way it is (refer to the web or wherever you can find), bloggers are not exactly being protected. The law can actually used against any website easily when someone find them an eyesore. haha...

"Authorities have said that online news sites must also be subjected to the same kind of accountability and responsibility as "offline" news media. Authorities added that the new rules are not a clamp-down, as websites can continue as per normal because they are subjected to the same content standards as before.

Only 10 sites come under the new regime -- they mainly belong to the mainstream media." - CNA, 6 June 2013

Only time will tell if this 10 will increase rapidly over the next few months/years...

Love . Marathon (II)

...

After the run, we went to McDonald's for breakfast since there isn't much option left. Where can we find a place that opens 24hours and reachable by foot near Esplanade? Anyway, as I mentioned in previous post, we left around 5+ and reached around 6+.

You can imagine how tired I am. But thankfully my friend let me to reach home first! I think they understand that as for the first time, I did not wait for them to discuss and I 'insisted' of reaching home first. haha...

A few hours later, I woke up and prepare myself to head to the west. The place of my friend's wedding church. Since my wallet, shoes and barang barang is with my friend after the wedding dinner (Thanks WQ!), I actually went out with minimal items and simple clothes. haha... But of course, I am still wearing a presentable outfit!

My first time to a friend's church wedding. I think I went to my neighbour's when I was young. I can't remember how she looks like now! haha.... It is simple and sweet. =)

May both my friends had a blissful marriage and live happily forever... =)

Love . Marathon

It's my pleasure and honour to attend wedding of my friends.
But never had I ever thought I will do it so crazily~!!!! haha

Last Friday, after being 'enrolled' into the 'Ten Brothers' gang, I was invited to attend the wedding of my 'brother'. Initially, I was asked to be the emcee and was agreed that I will skip the morning session so that I could have ample rest for the night marathon. But some changes to the arrangement, and I became part of the brothers of the wedding and will not be needed as an emcee. Sad? A little since I will not be able to complete my #10 soon. But I respect the fact that the one took over is from the wedding singing group. Professional, of course. Hence, it turn out to be an tiring but eventful day.

Morning session ended around afternoon, about 2+pm. I was one of the drivers that day as well. It is not an easy job for someone who is lacking of sleep that week. I had been working till late night for 2 consecutive days and could only sleep at 3+am prior to the wedding day. Testing my body limit, huh?! haha. Due to lack of time, I drove to and fro, to send my other 'brothers' and groom's parent to the hotel. But thankfully, I got some time to nap before the event began at 6+, 7pm.

I was stoning whenever I sat at the table. haha. I managed to go off after the newly wed went around to take photos with the guests. I needed to run off since these people try to stop me from going for Sundown Marathon and wanted me to stay on to drink with them! haha... Not that I don't want to stay, I don't want to 'fly aeroplane' since I hate people doing it, especially I am the one who get people to run this time round.

Sundown Marathon began at 11.30pm. My first 21Km marathon. I must say that I was not in the right condition to run. I could feel my heart is having a burden for me to run. In the end, I walked for more than 11Km. It was a great experience! Completing with two of my running Kakis together! Timing is no longer important. We completed within our 4h target anyway!

The run ended with a breakfast and by the time I reached home, it is 6+am! Imagine that! haha...

Project 3.0

Recently, I tweeted with a hash tag #JWProject30. What is that?

#JWProject30 refers to JarWee Project 3.0.

But what is it exactly about? I have no idea! haha... To be honest, there is no concrete plan yet. This idea came to me when I was doing my night run. I felt tired. I felt that something needs to be done. I wanted to make some changes to what I am doing. A short project could do me good.

Hence, I decided to start this Project 3.0. I will try to define what I wanted to achieve by the time I reach 30. Yes, to be honest, it is going to be in less than two years time. First thing came to my mind is to do a studio photo shoot, something I always wanted to do but have not done. 30 years old seems to be a good milestone for a person's life. To do the shoot, I must slim down and shaped up. 65kg will be target and I aims to lose at least a kilo per month!

Other than physical/looks, I decided that it is time to stop dreaming. I am likely to stop going to vocal lessons or even dreaming about performing. I would rather shift my focus on learning an instrument. Let's face it, I will not get famous anyway! haha...

I have many interests on hand. Opening a cafe is one of my dream, a more realistic dream. It is going to be costly, but at least if I work hard, it will be fulfilled. I will also try to come up with a plan in improving my bakery skills. First up, will be learning to make macarons.

Recently, I also started a new food blog, critic's critic (temporary name). Though it is not considered as professional, I did it my way. No restriction. No obligation. No guidelines. But I will not hold back to criticise any place that s**ks! haha... Look out for more reviews!

I am always proud of my still photography. When I mean still, it means things that doesn't move... e.g. food, flowers etc. But yesterday, I did a casual pre-wedding/couple photo shoot for my friends. With my friend's camera (with kit lens) and my amateur photography skills, we had a fun shoot. Hope it turns out well! =)

Anway, Project 3.0 will not be just the way I look. I aims to improve in many aspect of my life and skills. Hope you guys give me full encouragement and support! =) Thanks in advance! =)

Recap: KH & YL Wedding

Waking up early for my friend's wedding can be tough, imagine we are tired just by flying back from Japan via HongKong. I had never thought that flying back can be so tiring. The seats aren't that comfy! We took Cathay Pacific airline back. I was so tired that I actually sleep through the meal time when we flying to Hong Kong. Of course, I made sure I was fully awake to eat on the HK flight to Singapore. haha!
The Brothers in arms
It was a great weather for wedding and I am glad I made my way back for the wedding. Apart from seeing our good friend getting married, it is like a reunion for the rest of us. Among the brothers are my good friends in army days. I think I have not see Jx for like at least 4 years? Its great that the rapport among the brothers still existed. This is verified during the dinner time when we are tasked to do different things and yet covering/assisting each other during the dinner.

Garden Themed Photo Booth
I think I mentioned before that I am tasked in preparing the candy booth, photo booth during the cocktail. I am feeling a little stress out before the event. Since we went Japan for a week, I have no idea what is the status of the stuff for the booths. I received information that nothing much had changed, so I carry on my task as per my last impression.

Dwarfs checked. Flowers checked. Garden Wall checked. Photo stand checked. Gates checked. Photos? eh... Never mind, I began setting up the table... shall wait for KH's comment on the photos. It turned out good and I am so glad that we had a dry run at his place before setting up here. Minor problems was solved. Issues were taken care of. There you go, the photo booth all set up!

Candy Booth
Up next, the candy booth. This is where the hiccups began. haha... Firstly, the bottles are not seen anywhere. Then, I forgot about borrowing 3-tiers plate from my friend. Next the booth seems pretty empty after setting up. Thankfully, we kept calm and solved each problems one by one.

We requested from the hotel some plates for decorations. The plates is what I wished they could provide. Some minor changes made to make the booth less boring and it turned out to be great! My little DIY stuff I bought or brought along did help me to get my job done much easily.

Before the wedding, I am feeling a little disappointed why KH did not choose me to be his emcee and yet pay someone else to do it. (They are not even professional emcee!) But soon I realised on that day itself that he did make a good decision. Not that I am claiming much credit, since the success depended on every individual one of us, I find myself in the middle of getting things done. This of course, does not include the sister's roles.

last minute Heart decoration
Maybe due to the fact that I attended more wedding and helped out more than any one of the rest of the brothers, I am more experience. Hence, I am around offering advice and instructions and get the job done. We realised that nothing much was done by the official PIC. Not to fault him, since he is someone out of the brothers' circle of friends. He is groom's friend. Just that, IF I was made the emcee of the night, I may not be free to settle other issues.

I must say that the success depends on the sisters and brothers effort. On the brothers' side, I really amazed that we worked like we have been working together for years. As if we are seeing each other day in, day out for a long time. It definitely helps when we trust each other to do our part and trust whoever is giving the instructions. I am very emotional when I think back what happened that day.

I never know that I miss them so dearly. It is almost impossible for 11 of us to be back together at the same time in a single event! I guess I finally realised the statement we always hear... "True friendship can withstand the toughness of time". I'm sure our friendship will not die even though we have differences. We are the real brothers!
